The small intestines function is the digestion process, the large intestine does not digest as there are no active enzymes, the large intestines role is to store waste, create a balance of fluids (mainly water) and absorb other nutrients.So if we can not get rid of that stored fecal matter in the large intestine especially the colon (lower intestine) then that solid matter will rot and create bad gasses, disease etc.

It is small protruding pockets on the inner lining of the lower (descending) intestine and mainly in the sigmoid colon called Diverticula, these pockets are caused by a constipated bowel which is a build up of fecal material from low fiber, refined sugars and processed foods we consume.
